Biographie |
1874 ? 1949
Auguste Liesch was born in 1874 in Luxembourg. He had been working as a judge. As a liberal politician, Liesch was a member of the government of Emile Reuter from 1918 to 1921, a time of political instability in both domestic and foreign affairs. Head of the Luxembourg Customs administration in the 1930s, he published his first book in 1936: Maus Ketti (Mouse Ketti). Very soon, he became one of the most popular satirical authors of Luxembourgish literature. His humorous texts full of social criticism hold a mirror up to Luxembourg's society, for instance in poems like D'Hochzäit an der Kathedral (The Wedding in the Cathedral). Critical and ironical, Liesch questions his contemporaries' behavior from a middle class perspective, making fun of human weaknesses, mocking individual professions and humoristically distorting everyday life in short sketches. Liesch also wrote stories in German and French, in which he describes everyday life. His romantic peasant novel Im Schatten des Eichenhofes (In the Shadow of the Oak Farm), which discusses topics such as incest and an oppressive, small-town mentality, was published in installments between 1939 and 1940. In 1940, Liesch?s post as a state counselor was dissolved by the National Socialist civil government. In 1942, he was deported by the Nazis. After World War II, he held again a seat in the Council of State. In 1947, the poetry collection Allerhand (Miscellaneous) was released followed in 1979 by his complete works. Liesch died in 1949 in Luxembourg-Clausen. |
